Costa Mesa, California
Costa Mesa, the self-proclaimed 'City of the Arts,' blends world-class shopping and performing arts with a creative, laid-back culture just a mile from the coast.
History
Once part of Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana, the small town of Harper renamed itself Costa Mesa ('coastal tableland') in 1920. The Santa Ana Army Air Base brought thousands here during World War II, many of whom stayed, and the city incorporated in 1953 before blossoming into a retail and cultural powerhouse.
Things to do
Shop South Coast Plaza, catch a performance at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, visit the OC Fair & Event Center, or browse the indie shops of The LAB and The CAMP anti-malls.
