History
Brea — Spanish for 'tar' — grew out of the crude oil boom of the early 1900s and incorporated in 1917 as one of Orange County's earliest cities. As the oil fields wound down, Brea reinvented itself as a retail and cultural hub, launching its acclaimed Art in Public Places program in 1975.

Shop and dine at the Brea Mall and Birch Street Promenade, follow the self-guided Art in Public Places tour of 140+ sculptures, or hike among the redwoods at Carbon Canyon Regional Park.
