San Clemente, California
In 1925, a former mayor of Seattle named Ole Hanson bought a portion of the ranch and envisioned creating a planned community that would preserve the natural beauty of the area. He named his project San Clemente after San Clemente Island, which is visible from the shore on a cloudless day. He envisioned San Clemente as a "Spanish Village by the Sea." He imagined a community that would reflect the Mediterranean-style architecture and ambiance of coastal Spain, a vision that has been preserved and can still be seen in the city's design and layout today. Hanson hired architects to design homes and buildings in a uniform Spanish colonial revival style, with red tile roofs, white stucco walls, and arched windows and doors. He also built a public beach club, a golf course, a pier, and a train station to attract visitors and residents.
History
San Clemente is a coastal city in Orange County, California, known for its Spanish colonial-style architecture and scenic beaches. The land that is now San Clemente was originally part of the Rancho San Onofre y Santa Margarita, a large cattle ranch granted to Pio Pico, the last Mexican governor of Alta California, in 1841. After the Mexican American War, Pico sold his land to John Forster, an English immigrant who married Pico's sister-in-law. Forster continued to raise cattle and horses on the ranch until his death in 1882.
San Clemente soon became a popular destination for celebrities, politicians, and tourists who enjoyed its mild climate and picturesque views. Some of the famous people who stayed or lived in San Clemente include Hollywood stars like Charlie Chaplin, Betty Grable, and Mickey Rooney; President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who visited Hanson's home in 1938; and President Richard Nixon, who bought a seaside estate in 1969 and dubbed it "La Casa Pacifica" or "The Western White House". Nixon hosted several foreign dignitaries at his San Clemente retreat, such as Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev and Chinese leader Mao Zedong.
San Clemente has also faced some challenges and changes over the years. In 1939, a major flood damaged many homes and businesses in the downtown area. In 1971, an earthquake caused some structural damage to buildings and cracked the pier. In 1983, a landslide destroyed several homes along the coast. In 1993, the nearby San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station was shut down after a leak was detected in one of its reactors. In 2005, the city adopted a historic preservation ordinance to protect its architectural heritage from demolition or alteration.

It dates back to 1977. Next celebration will be July 20th and 21st, marking its 46th anniversary.
It began as a local lifeguard competition and had since evolved into ocean safety, environmental awareness, and community spirit.
