Lake Forest is not only a beautiful and safe place to live, but also witness to many historical events and transformations that shaped its identity and culture. Lake Forest was originally part of a large land grant called Rancho Cañada de los Alisos, which was given to José Antonio Serrano in 1842 by the Mexican government. Serrano and his family lived on the ranch until they had to sell it due to financial difficulties. The area became known as El Toro, which means "the bull" in Spanish, because of the bulls that roamed the ranch. In 1884, an Englishman named Dwight Whiting bought a sizable portion of the ranch and established an English colony. He invited many of his fellow countrymen to settle in El Toro and engage in farming and sheep raising. He also planted four hundred acres of eucalyptus trees, hoping to create a lumber industry in the region. The eucalyptus trees would later become a distinctive feature of Lake Forest's landscape. In the early 1900s, El Toro experienced rapid growth and development because of the nearby El Toro Marine Base, which brought many military personnel and their families to the area. The demand for housing and services increased, and El Toro transformed from a rural community to a suburban one. In 1991, El Toro incorporated as a city and changed its name to Lake Forest, reflecting its two man-made lakes and its forest of eucalyptus trees. In 2000, Lake Forest expanded its boundaries to include the master-planned communities of Foothill Ranch and Portola Hills, adding more diversity and amenities to the city. Today, Lake Forest is a thriving city with a population of over 85,000 people. It offers a high quality of life, with excellent schools, parks, recreation facilities, shopping centers, and businesses. It also preserves its heritage and history, with landmarks such as the Serrano Adobe, the oldest structure in the city dating back to the late 1880s. Lake Forest is a city that has evolved from a humble ranch to a modern metropolis, but it has never lost its charm and character. It is a city that celebrates its past, embraces its present, and looks forward to its future.
